Music I listen to "on the sly." Songs by Hole and Pumpkins when they were "over the hill," songs by ditsy youngsters and extremely sappy tunes by Jewel and Jarvis, well you get the idea. When will people figure out that Jewel is being wry and Avril is being real? Mobile is my absolute favorite. People who look down on this music are the kind of people who can't figure out that listening to "indie" bands like Arab Strap is kind of like going to the bar with your walkman on and running out of batteries. I wish we had Jewel instead of Death Cab for Cutie at the Siren festival, then those dirty indie kids wouldn't look so dumb making out in the middle of the crowd. Even if you've got Elvis Costello glasses or an MFA you're still made of flesh, which means you like to spaz out to some catchy tunes with a handsome stranger.
